My journey with medicinal mushrooms began early.

My father, Dr. Terry Willard, Ph.D., wrote the first western book on reishi mushrooms: 1990’s Herb of Spiritual Potency and Medicinal Wonder. During this time, he often shared stories of his travels to China, where mushrooms are key to promoting health and longevity. His work sparked my own fascination with these powerful fungi.

As a clinical herbalist and lifelong advocate, I’ve come to see functional mushrooms as essential for what I call “resilience on a polluted planet.” In a world filled with toxins and chronic illness, these mushrooms are a staple in my family’s health routine, especially during the colder months when we need extra immune support.

Once a cornerstone of traditional medicine, functional mushrooms are now gaining popularity in the West for their ability to boost immunity, reduce inflammation, and tackle issues like adrenal fatigue, cognitive decline, and stress.

While there are over 100 species of medicinal mushrooms, I focus on five that have been extensively studied: reishi, chaga, lion’s mane, turkey tail, and cordyceps. Here’s why they’re your secret weapon for well-being.

Functional mushrooms are natural immunity-boosters

The immune-supportive properties of functional mushrooms are well documented in both anecdotal reports and scientific literature. Many contain significant amounts of polysaccharides, and particularly beta-glucans—long chains of sugar molecules found in foods like vegetables and grains. These compounds play a vital role in reducing inflammation, supporting a healthy microbiome, enhancing white blood cell activity, and even inhibiting tumor cell growth. Chaga, reishi, and turkey tail are especially rich in these immune-boosting compounds.

Functional mushrooms help with brain power and focus

Lion’s mane is the “it” mushroom of the moment, gaining attention for its unique ability to support cognitive function. It stimulates the production of nerve growth factor, a protein vital for the maintenance and growth of nerve cells. This makes lion’s mane a valuable ally in improving mental clarity, memory, and nerve health.

For those managing multiple demands or seeking mental sharpness throughout the day, taking lion’s mane extract capsules or incorporating the powder into a morning beverage can provide subtle yet impactful improvements to focus and concentration.

Functional mushrooms support energy, stress relief, and sleep

When it comes to battling stress and fatigue, cordyceps mushroom is a game-changer. Often referred to as a “super-adrenal” tonic, cordyceps helps modulate energy levels and fight against adrenal fatigue and burnout.

Studies show that cordyceps may protect the body from oxidative stress and enhance athletic performance through increasing the production of ATP: the molecule responsible for delivering energy to muscles. A daily dose of cordyceps can help you fight modern-day stressors while boosting endurance and vitality.

Reishi is another powerhouse for stress management. Known as the “mushroom of immortality,” reishi has been used for centuries to calm the mind, ease anxiety, and improve sleep quality. It works by modulating your body’s stress response and helps reset your natural rhythms, making it an excellent ally for those struggling with insomnia, anxiety or circular thinking.

How to incorporate functional mushrooms into your routine

The secret to achieving the benefits of functional mushrooms is to take them consistently over time. A variety of forms, from powders to capsules to teas to tinctures, makes it easy to establish a convenient routine. Results don’t happen overnight; the effects are subtle and often won’t be noticed until after two or three weeks of daily use.

In my household, we mostly use a five-mushroom blend of reishi, chaga, lion’s mane, turkey tail, and cordyceps to get the benefits of all the top varietals. During cold and flu season, a chaga-chino is our drink of choice, as chaga has a comforting, earthy flavour with subtle notes of walnuts, cocoa, and vanilla. This drink is easy to make: just add a concentrated mushroom powder to your coffee, tea, or herbal latte to fortify your immune system year round.

When choosing mushroom products, look for organic and certified sources that use the fruiting body, not just the mycelium. Fruiting bodies contain higher concentrations of beneficial compounds. Ensure products have transparent sourcing, clear labelling, and are backed by research. Avoid fillers and opt for brands with ethical, sustainable practices. While medicinal mushrooms are generally safe, it’s always wise to consult your doctor if you’re on medications or managing health conditions.

Functional mushrooms aren’t just another wellness trend—they’re potent, time-tested allies for immune support, brain health, and stress management. Whether you’re looking to prevent illness, improve cognitive performance, or find natural ways to reduce stress, these mushrooms offer a holistic approach to long-term health.
