Guillain-Barre Syndrome In Pune News: A rare brain disorder called Guillain-Barr Syndrome (GBS) has taken Pune in its grip. In the last 24 hours, the city has reported six new suspected cases of GBS, taking the total number of cases in the region to 73.
“The total number of GBS cases increased to 73, comprising 47 and 26 women. Of these, 14 are on ventilator support,” news agency PTI quoted an official from the state health department as saying.
This sudden spike in cases has raised concerns among health experts, especially since GBS in rare cases can lead to complete paralysis and, also death of the patient. To understand the condition better, we reached out to experts, and here is what you need to know about what a patient suffering from GBS may experience.
What is Guillain-Barr Syndrome?
Guillain-Barr Syndrome, also known as GBS, is an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system, which includes nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord.
According to the experts, this rare condition first hits the body and leads to a sudden drop in your energy — leading to extreme weakness. After this, the patient’s legs may feel tinglish, and slowly this can spread to other parts of the body (In rare cases it can lead to full paralysis).
While GBS is an extremely rare condition, taking cognizance of the situation it is inevitable that this disease can affect anyone, regardless of age, and its exact cause is not fully understood. In some cases, doctors have also informed that patients suffering from GBS may notice unusual onset of infections — such as a viral or bacterial illness, with the flu, and gastrointestinal infections.
What Causes Guillain-Barre Syndrome?
GBS often occurs following an infection, with many cases linked to viral or bacterial illnesses. The body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to weakness and sometimes paralysis. The exact cause remains unclear, but it is believed that the immune response triggered by infections, such as Zika virus, influenza, and even COVID-19, can initiate the syndrome.

As cases of GBS are on the rise in Pune, here is a quick look at the most common warning signs associated with this rare neurological condition:
- Weakness in the legs
